When Slack AI launched its channel summarization and search features, most enterprise IT teams processed the announcement as a product update. Only a small minority immediately escalated to Legal and Compliance with a question: "Where is our conversation data going to train these models?"

That question was the right one. The answer, at initial launch, was not fully documented. It took Slack several months to publish clear guidance on how enterprise message data is (and is not) used for AI model training.

This pattern — AI features shipping ahead of compliance documentation — is the rule, not the exception across enterprise messaging platforms in 2026. IT teams need to proactively assess each platform's AI data handling before enabling these features in regulated environments.

Platform-by-Platform AI Data Handling (2026)

Slack AI (Enterprise Grid)

Slack's current position: for Enterprise Grid customers, Slack AI does not use customer data to train global models. AI features run on per-customer model instances. Customer data does not leave the customer's tenancy for training purposes.

Documentation to request during vendor review: Slack's Enterprise Grid AI Data Processing Addendum. Verify the BAA covers AI processing if deployed in a healthcare context.

Microsoft Copilot (M365)

Microsoft's position: M365 Copilot does not use customer data to train foundation models. The Copilot grounding data (your organization's Teams, SharePoint, email) stays within your M365 tenant boundary. Copilot processes this data within the Microsoft Azure boundary designated in your data residency configuration.

For regulated industries: Copilot is included in Microsoft's standard HIPAA BAA for M365. For GDPR, verify your M365 data residency configuration maps to an EU datacenter if your users are EU-based.

Google Gemini for Workspace

Google's position: for Workspace Business and Enterprise customers, Google does not use customer data to train AI models. Gemini for Workspace operates under Google's Cloud Data Processing Addendum.

For HIPAA environments: Google's Cloud HIPAA BAA covers Google Workspace core services including AI features in Workspace Business/Enterprise. Verify which AI services are covered under the current BAA version.

Zoom AI Companion

Zoom's AI Companion (formerly Zoom IQ) launched with less clear documentation on training data usage. As of Q1 2026, Zoom's policy for enterprise customers: AI Companion does not use customer data to train base models for enterprise-tier customers.

HIPAA note: Zoom's HIPAA BAA covers Zoom Meetings and Zoom Phone. Whether AI Companion is covered requires explicit verification in your BAA amendment.

The Five Compliance Questions for Every Platform's AI Features

Before enabling AI features in a regulated environment, IT teams should get written answers to:

  1. Is customer message content used to train models? (The answer should be "no" for enterprise tiers, but requires written confirmation)
  2. Where is AI processing performed geographically? (Critical for EU data sovereignty)
  3. Is AI processing covered by our BAA? (HIPAA organizations only)
  4. What is the data retention period for AI processing intermediaries? (Vectors, embeddings, and prompts may have different retention than raw message content)
  5. Can we disable AI features for specific channels or users? (For channels containing PHI, PII, or attorney-client privileged communications)

The Bridge Layer and AI Compliance

When a messaging bridge (like SyncRivo) routes messages between platforms, the bridge becomes an additional AI compliance consideration. Specifically:
